Significant Presidio Heights house in a fabulous location close to the Presidio Park and Laurel Village shops and restaurants.  This remarkable property was reinvented by the well-known designer, Michael Taylor, and has extraordinary light-filled public rooms, large spaces and a wonderful indoor/outdoor feeling.  Five bedroom suites and numerous expansive gathering rooms.  Two garages, additional bedrooms for guests or live-in help, and beautiful outdoor areas including a front terrace with a fountain and a sun-drenched South-facing garden with a pool.  This is a wonderful and very special home.

This home’s impressive façade is graced with stonework and decorative ivy.  A private entrance leads to the front door, which opens onto an enormous open and airy reception area.  To the left is a palatial living room with multiple skylights drenching it in light.  The floor-to-ceiling windows open onto a wrap-around balcony with views of the Bay and a tranquil fountain.  Through this lovely room is a den, also very large but with more intimate gathering areas.  Adjacent to the entry is a formal dining area anchored by a very large fireplace with a floor-to-ceiling surround.  All the public rooms are finished in stone with soaring beamed ceilings, rendering them both accessible and dramatic.

At this level is a spacious kitchen with an island and full commercial range.  Through the very large butler’s pantry is the family room, which features amazing 18th-century wallpaper and wood floors in an intricate pattern imported from Versailles.  These rooms all have windows onto the back garden, which is South-facing and features a swimming pool as well as mature plantings and places for numerous seating arrangements.  The family room has French doors that open directly onto this space and bathe the room in light.

Through the kitchen are the laundry area and two additional bedrooms plus an upstairs room that share two hallway bathroom and all have windows onto the garden.  These could comprise a wonderful suite for live-in help or long-term guests.  A powder room and a wet bar off the entry complete this level.

Up the grand stone staircase is an impressive wood-paneled room with North-facing views, an ensuite bathroom and a separate wet bar.  This room could be used as a bedroom or a fantastic office or library.  To the rear of the house is the splendid master bedroom, with an enormous stone fireplace, ample closets, and two sets of French doors that open to a long private balcony.  The master bathroom accesses a spacious walk-in closet and dressing area.  Nearby is a smaller bedroom with a good-sized closet and split bathroom which currently opens to the master dressing area, making this wonderfully flexible space.  At this level, an architect has re-imagined the flat roof over the living room which is currently inaccessible and could create a wonderful walk-out view terrace.

The top floor houses two bedroom suites, both of which have Bay views.  The back bedroom is wallpapered in charming blue and white, and has a private North-facing balcony and Southern windows for light.  The front bedroom is large, with ample room for additional seating and several closets.

At the basement level are two garages which comfortably house four cars and have interior access through stairs from the kitchen area.

All this in a wonderfully serene location on a quiet tree-lined street just a few blocks from the Presidio Park, but also very close to Laurel Village and Sacramento Street shopping, dining and entertainment.

Presidio Heights

Presidio Heights is Pacific Heights without the pretension. While some of the grandest homes in the city are found in this neighborhood, including the cluster of mansions circled around the gated enclave of Presidio Terrace, Presidio Heights is very much a family-friendly community. On most days you can find families with young kids picnicking in Presidio Park, or romping through the nearby Julius Kahn playground. Preschools in the neighborhood include the Montessori Children's House and the Temple Emanu-El Pre-School. Local elementary School Claire Lillienthal scores in the upper 10% of all California elementary schools.

The older, established homes along the wide, quiet streets of Presidio Heights are mainly 2-story, large, and complete with front and back yards. This is a primarily residential neighborhood, with nearby shopping to be found in the adjoining Laurel district.

This is an ecumenical neighborhood. The stately dome of Temple Emanuel, the Jewish synagogue on Arguello is just around the corner from the Little Sisters of the Poor on Lake Street. Further down California Street the Jewish Community Center welcomes all to its first-rate health club and nightly performance series of dance, music, and theater. Across the street, Ella's, is much loved for its unpretentious comfort food and weekend brunch. Upscale restaurants clustered on Sacramento Street include Spruce and Sociale. The intimate, oozing with ambiance G Bar, makes a great place to meet for Martinis.
